Background
Burkhard Ludewig graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the Free University of Berlin in 1992 and received my doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1995. After two short postdoctoral positions at the Robert Koch Institute and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, he joined the Institute of Experimental Immunology at the University of Zurich. Since 2002, he has been head of the Medical Research Center at the Cantonal Hospital St. Gallen, Switzerland, and since 2021, head of the Translational Cardioimmunology Unit at the University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland. His research focuses on the interaction of stromal cells with innate and adaptive immune cells. His group has established preclinical models to study stromal cell function and has developed TCR transgenic mouse models to study viral infection and autoimmune myocarditis. Their clinical research programs are focused on myocardial inflammatory diseases, lung cancer and HPV-associated tonsillar carcinoma.
